Hot Stamping & Emboss Business Card Printing Malaysia

Create premium business cards with reflective hot stamping, raised emboss detail, or a combination of both. Choose from five card stocks — Art Card 250gsm or 310gsm with matt lamination, Ivory 250gsm, Suwen 240gsm or Linen 240gsm — in quantities from 200 to 1,000 pcs.

Hot stamping presses metallic or coloured foil onto selected areas of your design, giving a reflective finish that cannot be reproduced with normal CMYK ink. Embossing presses the card stock from behind to create a raised, three-dimensional impression you can feel with your fingers. The two can be combined on the same card for a more distinctive result.

Both finishes are commonly used on logos, company names and initials — the elements you want a client to notice and remember when the card is handed over.

Hot Stamping vs Emboss

If you are choosing between them: hot stamping is about catching light, embossing is about catching touch. Hot stamping shows up in photos and under lighting; embossing is felt the moment someone takes the card.

Finishing Availability by Material

Not every finishing combination is available on every card stock. Two-sided hot stamping is available on matt-laminated art card only:

Available Foil Colours

Hot stamping foil is applied as a physical foil, not printed with CMYK ink. Six foil colours are available:

• Gold — Pantone 871C
• Silver — Pantone 877C
• Red — Pantone 185C
• Green — Pantone 355C
• Blue — Pantone 072C
• Black — Pantone Black C

You may use a maximum of 2 foil colours on the same stamping side. Different foil colours must be kept at least 2mm apart from each other in the artwork.

Production Lead Time

3–5 working days upon artwork confirmation.

Production lead time starts after artwork confirmation and payment. Delivery time is separate from production time.

Artwork Requirements

Hot stamping and embossing are mechanical finishing processes, not printing effects. The area to be finished must be supplied as a separate vector file so we can produce the stamping block.

Files to prepare

For hot stamping, prepare 3 PDF files (plus 1 more if the reverse side is also being stamped):

1. File 1 — Full artwork: your complete design including the area to be hot stamped. Fill the stamping area in the Pantone colour you have chosen.
2. File 2 — Artwork without the stamping area: the same design with the hot stamped element removed. This is what gets printed in offset colour.
3. File 3 — Stamping area only: just the element to be hot stamped, positioned exactly as in File 1 so it registers correctly.

Zip the files together, or combine them into a single multi-page PDF.

Minimum sizes for hot stamping

• Font size: minimum 7.0 pt. Do not bold text at the minimum size — it will appear coarse and over-bleed.
• Line thickness: minimum 0.5 pt.
• Dot thickness: minimum 1.5 pt (0.5mm). This includes small punctuation such as commas, full stops, colons, semi-colons, apostrophes and quotation marks.
• Gap between lines and dots: minimum 1.0 pt.
• Internal gaps (the enclosed space inside letters such as a, e, o): minimum 2 pt (0.70mm).

Artwork format

• The element to be hot stamped must be in vector format, solid colour — no tint, gradient or transparency.
• Convert all fonts to outlines.
• Do not supply the stamping element as a JPEG or other raster image.
• Ensure the stamping element is positioned accurately against the full artwork to avoid mis-registration.

Safe zone

Elements to be hot stamped must sit inside the L-shape safe zone, measured from the bleed line:

• Landscape cards: 6mm from the left and right bleed, 7mm from the top and bottom bleed.
• Portrait cards: 7mm from the left and right bleed, 6mm from the top and bottom bleed.

Important text must sit within the full safe zone area. Hot stamping artwork may bleed out, but only within the L-shape safe zone.

Important Production Notes

Hot stamping and embossing behave differently from flat printing. Please read these before ordering:

• Registration tolerance: hot stamping on business cards has a tolerance of ±1.5mm. 100% accurate registration is not possible in gang-run production. Avoid designs where the foil must align perfectly on top of printed text or outlines.
• Card flatness: hot stamping can make the card thickness slightly uneven, and packed cards may appear slightly curved rather than perfectly flat. This is normal for this process.
• Stamping mark on the reverse: on card stock below 300gsm, stamping pressure may leave a visible mark on the back of the card. This affects Art Card 250gsm, Ivory 250gsm, Suwen 240gsm and Linen 240gsm. If a completely clean reverse is important to you, choose Art Card 310gsm.
• Emboss reverse impression: embossing pushes the card stock upward from behind, so a corresponding impression is normally visible on the reverse side. Avoid placing important text directly behind the embossed area.
• Fine detail: very small text and highly detailed logos may not stamp or emboss cleanly. Simplify where possible.
• Colour appearance: actual foil and paper colours may vary slightly from what you see on screen. Textured card stock can also produce a different foil appearance compared with smooth matt-laminated art card.
• Distance from creasing or folding: hot stamping must be at least 3mm away from any crease or fold line to avoid cracking.

Hot Stamping & Emboss Business Card FAQ

1. What is the difference between hot stamping and embossing?

Hot stamping applies a metallic or coloured foil to selected areas of your design, producing a reflective finish. Embossing presses the card from behind so the design rises above the card surface — there is no foil involved, and the raised area stays the same colour as the card. Hot stamping is mainly visual; embossing is mainly tactile.

2. Is hot stamping the same as foil printing?

They refer to the same result — a foil finish on the card. Hot stamping is the process name: heat and pressure transfer the foil onto the card using a metal stamping block. It is not printed with CMYK ink, which is why the metallic effect cannot be achieved with normal full-colour printing.

3. What foil colours can I choose?

Gold, silver, red, green, blue and black. You may use a maximum of 2 foil colours on the same stamping side, and different foil colours must be at least 2mm apart in the artwork.

4. Can I hot stamp both sides of the business card?

Yes, on Art Card 250gsm and Art Card 310gsm with matt lamination. Two-sided hot stamping is not currently offered on Ivory 250gsm, Suwen 240gsm or Linen 240gsm. Embossing is available on one side only across all materials.

5. Why is embossing limited to one side?

Embossing works by pushing the card stock up from the reverse. Because the process shapes the sheet itself, it is applied to one side only — the opposite side carries the corresponding impression.

6. Does embossing leave a mark on the back of the card?

Yes, a corresponding impression is normally visible on the reverse. This is inherent to the process. We recommend keeping important text clear of the area directly behind the embossed element.

7. Which card stock is best for hot stamping?

Matt-laminated art card gives the most consistent foil result because the surface is smooth and even. Textured stocks such as Suwen and Linen can still be hot stamped, but the texture may affect how fine detail reproduces and how the foil catches light.

8. Will my small logo or fine text stamp clearly?

It depends on the detail. As a guide: text should be at least 7 pt, lines at least 0.5 pt, dots at least 1.5 pt, and enclosed gaps inside letters at least 2 pt. Anything finer risks filling in or breaking up. Send us your artwork and we will advise before you order.

9. Will the foil line up exactly with my printed design?

There is a ±1.5mm registration tolerance on business cards. Designs that require the foil to sit exactly on top of printed text or an outline are high-risk and may show visible offset. We recommend keeping the hot stamped element separate from printed elements rather than stacked on them.

10. Will my cards be perfectly flat?

Hot stamping applies heat and pressure, which can make the card thickness slightly uneven. Packed cards may appear slightly curved. This is a normal characteristic of hot stamped cards and is not treated as a defect.

11. What artwork files do I need to prepare?

For hot stamping you need 3 PDF files: the full artwork, the artwork without the stamping element, and the stamping element on its own. All finishing elements must be vector, solid colour, with no gradient or transparency, and fonts converted to outlines.

12. How long does production take?

3–5 working days upon artwork confirmation. Delivery time is separate.

13. Do you provide the design?

Customers provide their own artwork. If you only need simple placement of an existing logo, contact us and we will advise what is possible.

14. Can I mix different names within the same quantity?

Please WhatsApp us your requirement before ordering — quantity and pricing for multiple names depends on how many designs are involved.
